    I will deeply miss Ian’s ‘Culture’ novels. If I ever get round to writing a sci-fi novel, and I hope I do, Ian M Banks will have been a major role-model.

  2. I’m in the same boat as Ian, below I can’t bring myself to read past the first few pages of The Quarry. I have read every single other work but like him I can’t bear the idea of there being no more to look forward to. Instead I have discovered there are a number of Iain’s ‘M’ books available as audio books and I am rediscovering them in this way while walking miles lost in The Culture.

    Thank you for all your good work and the pleasure it has given me. Your concept of a post-scarcity society has become my manifesto, and something like the Culture a way to get there. Good luck with the Subliming. :-{)}

    I read my first Culture novel while on holiday to St. Andrews in 1990 and became a dedicated fan of the series and of you. I thank you for the writing on many levels, as modern space opera, as brilliant intricate story telling, and as subtle comment on our relationships to each other and ourselves.

    Your situation makes my wishes trite at best, but as the ref blows the whistle, know that your run is appreciated.

  5. Have been reading Iain’s work for many years now but am finding it difficult to pick up & read ‘The Quarry’ as when I have read it there will be no more to look forward to. Thank you Iain, whatever substrate you have been downloaded to I hope you last forever.

  6. Thanks for everything you’ve given us.

    My favourite author of all time. You are sadly missed.
    Such a talent, and such a sad loss for so many.
    My thoughts are with your friends and family.

    Heartfelt sadness at his passing. His Culture novels are creations I will visit time and time again. The universe delivers much, and takes much away.

    My introduction to Iains books was when I picked up the highly recommended “The Algebraist”, in 2005. I loved that book, it was amazing, and I knew that I was going to be reading more from him. I took a break from books for a few years and when I dove back in I had a log of other novels that I wanted to read. Then in 2010 as I walked into a bookstore right on the display at the entrance of the store was “Surface Detail” staring me in the face. I didn’t bother going any further, I grabbed it and went straight to cashier and walked right out.

    Once again I looked into reading more sci fi books and looked for Iain’s work. Then I had learned that he passed away, and in such an incredibly fast way. This saddens me extremely and since I wont get a chance to tell him how much I enjoyed his writing I hope his family gets to see how many people have been entertained by his work. And that even though Iain is gone, his books will continue on and keep bringing joy to people who are alive now and ones that will are not yet born. Thank you Iain, and I hope you like your own asteroid.

  11. Thanks for everything you’ve given us.
